This describes how It’s a Dollar actually works, in plain language. It isn’t legal advice, and hasn’t been reviewed by a lawyer — treat it as a starting point, not a finished legal document.
The membership
It’s a Dollar is a $1/month membership. Joining means agreeing to a recurring monthly charge of $1 — or $1.35 if you choose to cover the card processing fee — billed automatically through Stripe until you cancel.
Billing
Your first charge happens immediately when you join. After that, every charge lands on the 15th of the month, regardless of your original join date. You can cancel at any time from the Manage your membership page — there’s no minimum commitment and no contract.
Voting
Some cycles, members get an emailed link to vote on which cause that cycle’s contributions go toward. Your vote starts with a weight of 1. You can increase it by spending points (earned through referrals) or by paying to boost it directly. Points and vote weight have no cash value, can’t be redeemed for money, and aren’t a financial instrument of any kind.
Referrals
Sharing your personal referral link may earn you points if someone joins through it and completes their first payment. Points are non-transferable and have no monetary value.
Where the money goes
Each cycle’s pooled contributions go to the cause members voted for, as recorded on the Impact page along with proof of the donation. Fund distribution is handled manually, in good faith — we don’t guarantee a specific outcome, timeline, or amount for any given cycle.
Emails
As a member, you’ll get emails related to your membership: payment receipts (from Stripe directly) and, on cycles with a vote, your personal voting link. We may also send occasional announcements; you can unsubscribe from those specifically at any time using the link in each one, without affecting your membership or vote-link emails.
Changes
We may update these terms, the causes on offer, or how the service works as It’s a Dollar grows. Continuing to use the service after a change means you accept the update.
If something goes wrong
The service is provided as-is. We’ll do our best to keep it running and to handle votes and donations honestly, but we can’t guarantee the service will be uninterrupted or error-free.
